Data loss and the culture of protecting assets

I’m genuinely surprised at the implied culture that must exist within some government departments to create a situation where important data can be “bunged” onto a disk and sent through the post. I’ve just finished a contract with a “GOCO” (Government Owned Commercial Organisation) in which the culture of data secrecy was so well established and a fundamental part of everyday behaviour that this kind of behaviour just wouldn’t be considered.
